We’ve got all sorts of crazy stuff going down today at the 7th Annual Bassani Xhaust NMRA Ford Nationals in Reynolds, Georgia – Records fall, cars cook, and the paparazzi catch a celebrity in the pits…

The NMRA attracts all types of fans from all over the country. Georgia resident Derrick Winbush, a native of Fort Valley, a town near the racetrack, stars at running back for the Jacksonville Jaguars. A Roush Mustang owner himself, he decided to come out and partake in the festivities. We caught him in the merchandise tent, where he (second from left) and a friend posed for a picture with Merchandise manager Sharon Shaw and Vendor Representative Lisa Bodrey.

Nitrous racer Sammy Vincent made a killer third round pass, clicking off a 7.46 at 184 miles per hour. Backed up by his previous qualifying pass, the run is a new MSD Super Street Outlaw record.

In a scary moment on the starting line, J.R. Granatelli popped an oil line and suffered an underhood fire. The amount of damage to the car is unknown, but JR is ok.

Justin Curry, piloting the School of Automotive Machinists SN-95 in Edelbrock Hot Street, ran a record 8.78 at 153 miles per hour today while securing the top slot in qualifying. All Curry needs to back it up is an 8.869 in eliminations tomorrow to seal the deal.

In yet another record pass, Mike Hauf went a 6.56 at 211 in the second round of qualifying. To claim his record, Hauf needs to run a 6.633 or faster in eliminations tomorrow, which looks doable for the champ, assuming the weather holds up.

In the BFGoodrich Tires Shootout (held during K&N Factory Stock qualifying), it came down to an all-2-valve final. Steve Gifford took the win with yet another potential record pass, as he stopped the clocks with an 11.42 at 117 miles an hour. Not only did that earn Farmer Steve the Shootout win and a check, it also secured the top qualifier spot.

In MSD Super Street Outlaw, Don Burton took the Nitto Tires Shootout win when Zack Posey broke after his burnout and had to be pushed back. Probably not the way “Burndown” Burton wanted to win, but that check will clear the bank just the same.

That’s it for today’s Bits from the Pits. Check back tomorrow for complete elimination results from Silver Dollar Raceway!
