The first round of qualifying at the 33rd annual NMRA Ford Expo was an interesting event. With scorching outside air temps, and track temps in the mid-130s, traction was quite a puzzle for the racers, with some able to make the right call and some forced to go back and make changes for the next round.

In ProCharger Super Street Outlaw, “The Fireball” John Urist took the top spot, laying down a 7.27 at 194 miles per hour, to take the early lead over the field. His 7.27 puts him a tenth and a half ahead of the next quickest competitor, Chris Tuten. The rest of qualifying should be exciting for the “Freak Show.”

Steeda Real Street competitor Bruce Hemminger handled the heat with aplomb. When you are bringing your own atmosphere to the track in a bottle, the heat doesn’t affect you quite as much. After the first round, his 9.48 stands as the high water mark for the rest of the field.

Yes, that’s Carlos Sobrino. Sobrino debuted his new BFGoodrich Tires Factory Stock ride here in Columbus. You can read more on the new car in the November issue of Race Pages “New Ride” section. Here, it has already proven that it works, jumping out for an early lead over the Factory Stock field, carding a spinning 11.21 at over 120 miles per hour.
